WHAT IS VENETIAN PLASTER / LIME PLASTER?

Venetian plaster is a centuries-old technique that brings depth, texture, and luxury to interior spaces. With origins dating back to Ancient Rome and popularized during the Renaissance in Venice, this art form includes finishes such as the renowned Marmorino, known for its rich, polished appearance and subtle movement.

Authentic Venetian plaster—also referred to as lime plaster—is 100% natural. It is made from slaked lime putty combined with marble dust, kaolin, quartz, or other mineral aggregates. This eco-friendly composition creates breathable, durable, and elegant surfaces that stand the test of time.

Traditionally applied by trowel, Venetian plaster can also be customized through various decorative techniques to achieve unique effects—from smooth, high-gloss surfaces to matte or textured finishes. Each application is bespoke, allowing for endless creative possibilities tailored to the design vision.

One of the most remarkable properties of lime-based plasters is their natural chemical transformation. Once applied, the plaster absorbs carbon dioxide from the air and slowly reverts to its original limestone state, forming a hard, mineral-rich surface that is both beautiful and long-lasting.

    • Lime plaster is nontoxic and does NOT release any VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the environment.

  • ABSORBS CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2):

    • When lime plaster is exposed to the CO2 in the air it starts its curing process to turn back into limestone. This curing process means it improves the air quality of your home by absorbing carbon dioxide.

  • PREVENTS  MOLD & MILDEW:

    • The high pH levels in lime plaster acts as a natural fungicide and helps prevent mold and mildew.

  • DURABLE AND TIMELESS:

    • Lime plaster finishes are durable in both a physical and aesthetic sense. Unlike other materials, lime plaster becomes harder and more durable over time. The durability and beautiful finish make it a great investment for your home that is sure to pass the test of time.

  • LOW MAINTENANCE:

    • Venetian plaster surfaces can be easily cleaned with a soft microfiber cloth. Minor scuffs can be lightly sanded with very fine sandpaper and wax can be reapplied to achieve a "good-as-new" surface.
