Venetian plaster has been around for many centuries, dating as far back as the Roman times. Its use became more prevalent in the more recent Renaissance period in Venice where the Marmorino finish was introduced. Authentic Venetian plaster is 100% natural because it is slaked lime putty that is mixed with marble dust, kaolin, quartz or other aggregates to produce a variety of decorative plasters (Venetian plaster and "lime plaster" are the same).

 

Venetian plaster is more commonly applied by trowel, but other decorative techniques allow for different application methods for truly beautiful and bespoke plaster finishes. Once the lime plaster is applied to a surface and exposed to the carbon dioxide in the air it starts the process to return to its original limestone state. This means Venetian plaster starts as limestone and after it is applied and cured it turns back into limestone.
